Malaysia Have A Comfortable Cushion After Beating Vietnam 2-0

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia have a comfortable cushion when they travel to Hanoi after beating Vietnam 2-0 in the first semi-final of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, here Wednesday night.

Mohd Safee Mohd Sali emerged as the national hero when he scored both goals in the 60th and 79th minutes.

The return leg of the semi-final will be held at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, Vietnam on Dec 18.

Playing before a crowd of 35,000 spectators, both teams played a safe game in the first half.

The Malaysian and Vietnamese players attacked relentlessly but failed to find the net in the first 45 minutes.

After the breather, both teams adopted a more aggressive game with the Malaysian players under by coach K. Rajagopal clearly having the upper hand when Mohd Safee Mohd Sali scored the first goal with a header from a free kick taken by Safiq Rahim in the 60th minute.

The Vietnamese were again humbled when Mohd Safee found the net for the second time in the 79th minute, when the attempt by Safiq Rahim from about two meters outside the penalty box was parried by keeper Bui Tan Trong, only to be sent back into the net by Mohd Safee.

Jolted by the two goals, Vietnam tried to narrow down the gap without success until the final whistle. The match was refereed by Sun Baojie from China.
